Furnace Repair - Thinks To Check:

Gas furnaces have become increasingly more complicated over the years. Both advanced electric circuits and natural gas systems are potentially dangerous and technically demanding. You can do some basic diagnostics but leave the more aggressive troubleshooting to trained technicians. These are items you can check to verify operation and perhaps prevent an un-needed service call:

  • Does your furnace have power?
    • Check your furnace circuit breaker panel to ensure that your heating system breaker hasn't tripped.
    • Check the "Emergency Switch" for your furnace. This is typically a toggle switch with a RED cover-plate adjacent to the entrance to your utility space.
  • Is the thermal fuse missing? Some furnace utility spaces have a replaceable thermal fuse on the ceiling near the furnace. Make sure that fuse is in place.
  • Does your furnace have natural gas?
    • Make sure the manual shutoff valve on the gas line to your furnace is turned "ON".
    • Verify with another gas appliance like your oven or range that your home has natural gas available.
  • Is your thermostat in good order and calling for heat?
    • If it has batteries, change you thermostat batteries now.
    • Make sure your thermostat is "ON", is set to "HEAT", and the desired room temperature is set higher than the current ambient temperature.
  • Condensing furnace vent outlet. If you have a plastic vented condensing furnace they often discharge out the side of you home:
    • If this is the first cold snap of the season and you can access your vent termination safely, check to make sure there is nothing like leaves of insect debris obstructing your vent terminal or combustion air intake.
    • Winter storm warning? If you have recently had a significant snowfall, check your furnace vent to ensure that it is clear of snow.
  • Is there proper airflow through your furnace and ductwork?
    • If your furnace has a disposable filter, change it now.
    • Verify that almost all of your systems supply registers and cold air returns are open and free of obstruction.

Other common furnace service issues include:

  • Heat system is not working at all. There appears to have power and gas, but nothing at all happens on a call for heat:
    • A blocked vent system, condensate line, or lack of power.
    • A failed component like a transformer, furnace control, or inducer motor.
  • Furnace tries to start, but either fails to fire, or fire drops out shortly after lighting:
    • An obstructed vent system.
    • Improper grounding or incorrect gas pressure.
    • Problem with the burners, heat exchanger, or flame safety system.
  • The heating system generally runs, but needs to be restarted every once in a while.
    • Problem with the thermostat or T-stat batteries.
    • Problem with the flame safety components, gas valve or gas pressure, or the heat exchanger.
  • Furnace runs, but something seems to have changed:
    • Dirty filters and lack of maintenance. This would cause inconsistent temperature or wide temperature swings, unusual blower noise, or rapid furnace cycling.

If your furnace is older, or if we find your furnace needs major repairs, we may recommend you consider upgrading to a new Armstrong furnace. Click here for more details.

Although normally extremely safe, when a furnace is not properly maintained, there are some problems that can occur in this process. Of particular importance are some serious safety issues include:

  • Carbon monoxide poisoning: Carbon monoxide is a toxic invisible and odorless gas that is created from incomplete combustion. Furnaces that have not been regularly maintained are much more likely to produce dangerous levels of carbon monoxide.
  • Gas leaks: Natural gas leaks in your home can be a recipe for disaster. During a furnace tune-up the technician will make sure there are no cracks in your heat exchanger and burner assembly.
